"Getting To The Root of Your Breakage"

Testing, Testing, 123

See what I did there? No? Ok.... Anyhoo..

Hello everyone,

Just a quick post on identifying your damage, these 3 quick tests can help you determine your hair's health
READ MORE

1. Breakage or Shedding: "Check for the Bulb"

If the hair falls out due to shedding, one end will be white, click here for more on the difference between breakage and shedding

2. Elasticity: "Give it a tug"

This is a great indicator for if your hair needs moisture or protein,

Hold a strand of hair at each of the 2 ends using your thumb and index finger (of both hands) and the gently tug on the strand by slightly moving your hands in opposite directions.

If it snaps when you tug (gently tug), then your hair is most likely brittle and lacking moisture. So step up your moisture game and ease up on the protein

If it stretches but doesn't return to its original length and shape, (you know, like a slack rubber band) then this is indication that you have a moisture overload. At this point put some moisture in it!

S.N.  Hair with the right amount of Protein/Moisture will eventually break so take note of the amount of force your "tugging" with.

3. Porosity: Does it sink or Float

Put a strand of hair in a bowl of water, if it floats then your hair has low porosity and if it sinks your hair has high porosity levels. What does this even mean?

Having highly porous hair is literally like pouring water in a basket because no matter how much moisturing and deep conditioning you do your hair is still dry. This problem arises when the cuticles of the hair shaft are raised, so you need to get your cuticles to lay flat.

Suggestion:
Try an acidic conditioner like  Roux Porosity Control or you can rinse your hair with Apple Cider Vinegar after deep conditioning.(Warning: This does not smell like apples!!!)

Hair with low porosity levels is resistant to moisture coming in but will also lock in the moisture that is in there, so this isn't a bad thing.

Suggestion:
You just need to deep condition your hair using body heat (wrapping your head in a plastic bag and placing a towel over it) or external heat (plastic bag and sitting under the dryer). Also start your co-washes and regular washes with a warm water rinse.

Finally if all the suggestions above fail;

Clarify, Do a Protein Treatment, Deep Condition and finally stay away from damage sources (chemicals, heat etc).

Until next time Happy Hair Growing...
